Awards for cleanest wards in Thiruvananthapuram Corporation

The Corporation is leaving no stone unturned in its quest to clean up the city as part of its ‘My City, Beautiful City’ project. With the lofty aim of inspiring its councillors to do everything in their power to clean up their respective wards, the local body is planning to turn the whole thing into a competition. The wards that manage to meet all the targets set by the Corporation will be declared as ‘Suchitwa wards’ (clean wards).

One of the major conditions is that at least 60 per cent households in the ward should have working pipe compost units, biogas plants, or other waste treatment mechanism. The ward should have enough aerobic bins or bigger biogas plants, to take care of the waste from the rest of the households. A mechanism should be evolved to collect plastic waste from all houses.

No waste dumps should be seen in any part of the ward and no waste should be transported out of the ward limits. The meat shops and hotels should also have their own mechanisms to treat waste or must have signed contract with private firms collecting waste.

According to T.M. Thomas Isaac, MLA, who has been anchoring the programme here, a ‘technical service team’ comprising Kudumbasree members is being formed in all wards.

“One member each from this team will have 100-150 houses to take care of. This person will provide all the help to make the pipe composting units work. Such units have already been installed in around 73,000 houses in the city, but most of them are not being used right now. People were not properly taught how to make use of it. With constant help at hand, they can be guided at every stage,” Mr. Thomas Isaac said.

Any ward that met all the conditions would be declared a ‘Suchitwa ward’ on January 1.

“If at least a dozen wards are able to meet the targets, then it will be a great achievement. It is a kind of open competition and is a huge incentive for the councillors,” the MLA said.
